A curious stone carved 'basin' of unknown antiquity can be found in the Shaw's Park area of Rivington. It is at once impressive for the difficulties that can be imagined in producing such an object and at the same time troubling, for it's crudeness. There is a strange "V" shaped gap in one side, visible at the front in the photograph. It is difficult to decide if this is deliberate and may have been used as a spout, if the object is indeed a basin and intended to hold liquid.

A strikingly similar, if more neatly carved stone basin can be found at Carl Wark Hillfort in Derbyshire. It is believed to be of Roman or earlier origin and the hillfort was certainly used by in pre-history and later as a Roman camp.
