Caves on Winter Hill

Although no caves of any notability are known to exist in the Winter Hill area there are several small caves and "potholes" have been described briefly in some locations where streams occur over limestone type rocks.

Some caves may in fact be due to early quarrying or mining such as the fairly well known caves shown here. It is unusual for caves to form in the local gritstones except possibly where geological fault action occurs. The cave shown on the right is accessible via a small vertical drop of a few feet to where a short passage leads into a small chamber with an inviting seat like rock shelf along one wall.

There is a second cave nearby that has a peculiar internal structure. Accessed through a small hole on a ledge in a rock face, the small chamber shown below leads through a tight squeeze into a desceding spiral of sloping ledges that become narrower such that a casual explorer is overcome with claustrophobia and a fear of becoming stuck. It is possible to throw small rocks further into the cave and their fall can be heard for some distance.

There are also several small artificial caves in the terraced gardens created by Lord Leverhulme and these are interesting but not really classifiable as an explore.
