Winter Hill Glacially Striated Rock

In a very small fenced off area at Winter Hill there is a section of rock exposed, that appears to bear evidence of glacial scoring in the form of a deeply gouged, linear feature. Such sites on the hill are mentioned elsewhere but without proper description or location.

Glaciers are a large, slow moving rivers of ice that moved across our landscape during several geological periods. Glaciers are very poweful and scraped rock from the land forming most of our characteristic scenery. They pick up many rocks from different areas as they progress across the country and trap them in their frozen base. It is this rock embedded base of the glacier that score or scrape across the surfaces of rock the glacier had exposed.

It should be noted that the other interesting looking shapes and marks on this rock (with the exception of a very regular circular feature) are typical of rocks in the area and are almost certainly natural in origin. The feature we are examining is remarkable due to it's regular, linear shape.

The area is accessible but fenced off, presumably to protect the site. There are several small boulders nearby that surround a small hollow that may have held water in the past and may be natural, but may indicate some human activity at some time in the past.
