The Winter Hill water catchment area has of course been modernised over the years and many late 19th Century and present day water facilities can be found, often linking into older sections and sometimes disused mine tunnels.
It is dangerous to enter the modern water tunnels as they are actively transporting often high volumes of water. The flow of water in the tunnel shown here is controlled by a system of sluices and these could be opened at any time filling the tunnel to capacity. Most of the modern water facilities are secured and tunnels are barred at the ends.
In general the modern water facilities are found around the reservoirs and rivers where water collection is active today and where existing tunnels have been replaced to allow larger modern roads to be built above.
The main reservoirs will be found to feature large scale stone water tunnels, towers, embankments and underground chambers that are in use today for water collection and as parts of the reservoir overflow system.
