Beefsteak Fungus

A large bracket fungus with a red or orange top and pale underside.

Beefsteak Fungus can be found on Oak trees, especially old ones or sometimes on Chestnut. Usually on the base of the trunk, from summer to autumn.

According to Phillips the Beefsteak Fungus causes the oak to darken and this is desirable to the furniture industry.

Edible - also according to Phillips.
