Small Tortoiseshell

The Small Tortoiseshell is amongst the most well known British butterflies. The attractive patterns on the wings and it appearing almost any time of the year have made it a familiar sight. Can be found across a wide range of habitats, but is most often seen where nettles grow, as these are what the caterpillars food source. Small Tortoiseshell butterflies hibernate in Britain throughout the winter.
